Far Far WestNepal is one of the poorest countries in Asia. Besides poverty, the country is struggling with corruption and the lack of women’s rights. It wasn’t until 2001 that Nepal changed the law so that bonded labour became illegal, and centuries of slavery ended as a consequence. In the far west of Nepal, Danchurchaid has set up small workstations to help women in need. Poverty is pervasive in this area, and natural disasters like flooding happen often and destroy the farmer’s seed. In many cases the families are so poor that they are fighting to survive. Therefore many women seek the only other option available to them, which is going abroad to try to find work. Sadly, most of them discover that they have even fewer rights in other countries than in Nepal, and in many cases these women return to Nepal scarred for life. |
