Grande Hotel Beira
Believe it or not! This run-down and destitute building once served as luxury hotel in the 1950s Mozambique during the Portuguese colonial era. With its stunning view overlooking the Indian Ocean, the hotel’s location is one of the prime spots in the city of Beira. Shortly after Mozambique won its independence in 1975, civil war broke out in 1977 and it lasted for another 15 years.
During the war, the hotel was primarily used as a military base. In 1992, homeless people squatted the place and sold the inventory. There is not much left of this once grand hotel that now serves as a home for more than 2000 people who do not pay rent.
